Kingsthorpe GC, Northampton - Sunday 25 March

Following what seemed like days and weeks of torrential rain, the golfing gods smiled on UGAGB for the season’s opening event at Kingsthorpe GC with sunglasses required for journeys to Northampton, though a biting cold wind made the temperature feel noticeably a few degrees cooler once play got under way.

The President, Roman Skalsky, welcomed 18 members, including new member Shaun Stramkowski, and 1 guest, and after breakfast, players were drawn into 5 teams, one 3ball and four 4ball teams. Under the circumstances, most of the course exposed to the sun was not in bad condition given the time of year, however, the greens would have benefitted from a cut and in shaded areas, the ground was muddy and churned. Still, much better than last season’s opening event only a few miles from Kingsthorpe and good to blow off the cobwebs, especially those who had not played since last season.

Results were as follows:

                                  Division 1                            Division 2

Winner                      Ashley Sanders 36pts         Andrei Michaluk 33pts

Runner Up                Mick Borys 34pts                Scott Frearson 33pts

Third Place               Mick Melnyk  32pts            Mick Rewilak 30pts

Minor prize winners were:

Nearest Pin              Ange Kaminskiy, Geoff Gillies

Nearest Pin in 2       Mick Borys

Longest Drive          Mick Borys

A total of 6 birdies were recorded: Scott Frearson with two and one each for Stef Borys, Ashley Sanders, Ange Kaminskiy and Bob Semehen.

In the absence of last year’s Bendzak Memorial trophy winner, The President presented the trophy to Ashley Sanders, noting he was the only member that played to their handicap on the day.

A special mention goes out to two members that joined the society last year:

Andrei Michaluk – winning division 2 with a very impressive score of 33, it appears he has been working on his game over the winter, well done Andrei, keep it up.

George Frost – George had never played golf before joining the society, and mentioned yesterday he has been having lessons, which I for one that played with him a couple of times last year and yesterday, can testify his golf has improved tremendously and hopefully continue improving this season.

Our next event is on Sunday 21 April at Davenport GC, Pointon, Cheshire, a course we have never played before and look forward to seeing you all there.

Mick
