Bohdan Semhen wins the prestigious President's Shield

Bohdan Semhen proved to be a swinging success at the recent UGAGB golf event held at Houldsworth Golf Club in Stockport, where our dedicated members gathered to compete for the prestigious President's Shield. As we teed off in six team groups of three balls, the UK weather had recently taken a turn, but the day remained kind and, most importantly, dry.

Eighteen of UGAGB's finest golf enthusiasts answered the call, with six members forming Division One and twelve competing in Division Two. The day was filled with thrilling moments and outstanding performances, both on and off the course.

Let's begin with the winners of our on-course contests:

Nearest Pin - Hole 2: Iwan Kudiarskyj showcased precision with an accurate shot.

Nearest Pin - Hole 16: Geoff Gillies proved his mettle with a skillful approach.

Nerest Pin in 2 on the challenging Hole 15: Anton Sydor achieved a remarkable feat.

Longest Drive - Hole 9: Mick Melnyk showcased his power and precision.

Now let's delve into the divisional winners and runners-up:

Division Two:

1st Place: Bohdan Semhen with an impressive 40 points.

2nd Place: Roman Skalsky earned his spot with 36 points.

3rd Place: Mick Rewilak performed admirably with 35 points.

Division One:

1st Place: Andrij Kaminskiy led Division One with 39 points.

2nd Place: Mike Bartkiw secured the runner-up position with 37 points.

3rd Place: Zenon Sydor put up a commendable performance with 28 points.

Team Award:

Special mention goes the "The Kings," a formidable team consisting of Bohdan Semhen, Roman Skalsky and Mick Rewilak. With their combined excellence, they dominated the team event, amassing an impressive total of 93 points, an achievement which truly highlighted their remarkable teamwork. The Kings also formed the trio of winners in Division Two.

In the Birdie pool event, five birdies were secured, with each golfer earning a prize pot of £7 per birdie. Matviy Bdzola claimed two birdies, while Geoff Gillies, Mike Bartkiw and Andrij Kaminskiy each contributed one birdie to the mix.

The day reached its pinnacle with the presentation of the President's Shield to the overall champion, Bohdan Semhen. It was a moment of pride as he received the shield from last year's winner, our very own President, Roman Skalsky.

Before the award ceremony which this time around was announced by Graham Meggitt, members were treated to a delightful meal expertly prepared and served by the hosting club. The feast featured hearty Steak Pie accompanied by a mountain of chips and sea of peas, followed by a delightful and very light meringue and ice cream dessert, a perfect complement to the main course.

As for the golf course itself, although relatively flat, it proved to be a challenging test of our golfing skills. Early autumn leaves scattered around, adding a touch of natural beauty and providing a reminder of the changing seasons.

Our heartfelt congratulations go out to all the winners and participants, and our gratitude extends to the hosting club for their warm hospitality.

Stay tuned for our next golfing adventure at Melton Mowbray GC on Sunday, 15th October 2023.

The upcoming event holds special significance as it will mark the conclusion of our annual Order of Merit title. Currently, the top three positions are closely contested, with Mike Bartkiw at 164 points, Andrij Kaminskiy at 178 points, and Geoff Gillies leading with 182 points. The competition is fierce, promising an exciting showdown and a thrilling final day of our golfing calendar.

On a final note, after the event and dinner at Melton Mowbray, the UGAGB will convene for its annual AGM. We strongly encourage as many members as possible to participate and offer their constructive contributions to the meeting. For those members unable to attend the event but wishing to raise specific matters at the AGM, please feel free to privately email your point(s) to Graham Meggitt. Your input will then be included on the agenda.

Until then, may your swings stay strong and the memories of Houldsworth GC be stronger.

Thanks

Graham
