A day of camaraderie, challenge and golfing joy!

On Sunday, August 20th, 2023, the UGAGB converged at Northcliffe Golf Club, under Yorkshire’s sunny sky, for a round of golf which developed into a day of camaraderie, challenge and golfing joy. Despite a gentle breeze that occasionally swept across the course, the weather remained generous, offering abundant sunshine and a welcoming warmth. Perfect conditions for 22 members to enjoy a day of golf at its very best. This event wasn’t to be just another round of golf, it was a journey back into the heart of “Gods own country,” Yorkshire.

The days Championship Trophy competition was divided into two divisions, 7 members made up Division One and 15 Division Two. We arrived around 10am welcomed by the aroma of sausage/bacon sandwiches, tea and coffee which gently awoke our senses, setting the tone for the day of enjoyment.

As the clock moved towards 11am, our groups assumed their positions, ready to embrace the challenge of the Championship Trophy, a stroke-play competition that promised to test all parts of our members golfing skill. To capture the memories of our day, Mick Rewilak arranged for photographs of each group to be taken on the first tee, overlooking the formidable ravine of the first hole. These snapshots now stand as a visual testament to the friendship which defines our society.

Northcliffe GC, nestled close to the historical village of Saltaire, unfurled before us some beautiful parkland landscape, with mature treelines guarding many of the fairways. The journey commenced with a daring shot across an impressive gorge, setting the stage for the tests that lay ahead.

The very best of this course was reserved for the final hole, the signature par 3. A raised tee, a green nestled at the base of a valley, overlooked by the clubhouse and a viewing balcony. We had possibly experienced one of Yorkshire’s finest par 3s and an unforgettable finishing hole and let’s not forget the steep and strenuous climb back up to the clubhouse, where our post-match meal was to be served.

As for the results, here’s a glance of the winners and their categories. Event Winner – Championship Trophy

Ashley Sanders – Net 70 points

A special acknowledgement goes to Ashley, who claimed the August Championship Trophy with a superb Net 70 (1 under the course’s par of 71). showcasing both his skill and competitiveness. Division One

Nearest Pin in 2 on hole 9: Anton Sydor

Longest Drive on Hole 13: Anton Sydor. The hardest hole on the course, 414yard, par 4 with a constant incline, into the wind. This didn’t phase the might of Anton, whose longest drive proved to be a monster.

Our president Roman Skalsky, oversaw the prize announcements. From the 2 birdie maestros Anton Sydor and Ashley Saunders to the triumphant event winner Ashley Saunders. He even celebrated the quirks of our game, awarding a golfing picture frame to Ambroz Docyminskyi, the consolation prize for most 10’s in the round. As the curtain closed on this event, we eagerly await our next gathering. Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 17th when Houldsworth Golf Club will be our host. Until then, may your swings remain steady and the memories of Northcliffe GC linger on.
